WHAT IS BOULDERING?
Bouldering is a fast-growing and social style of rock climbing. Climbers do not use ropes or harnesses, but scale shorter walls and are protected by a thick, padded floor. There is very little special knowledge or equipment required to start bouldering, making it fast and easy to learn and enjoy.
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
Come try it! Drop-in climbing is always welcome during open hours! Every Saturday night we have First Time Visitors night at all three gyms with discounted drop-in and rental rates. Another great option is our Introduction to Bouldering Class. This hour-and-a-half lesson covers all the fundamentals of bouldering to give you the best start possible. As an added bonus, participants get a FREE 2-Week Membership.
DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO BELAY?
Belaying involves managing a rope for a climber when they are ascending taller walls that require a rope. Since bouldering does not utilize ropes or harnesses for protection, belaying is not necessary. Bouldering gyms have shorter walls and a padded floor to help protect falls.
IS BOULDERING SAFE FOR NEW CLIMBERS?
Yes. As with any athletic pursuit, there are some risks associated with bouldering. By using common sense and choosing ability-appropriate terrain, bouldering can be both safe and fun for climbers at any level. See our Safety information pamphlet on the right for more information.
HOW TALL ARE THE WALLS?
Our walls range in height from 8-17 feet. We offer a variety of terrain to cater to all levels. We are also very proud to offer a huge amount of top-out terrain (climbers can climb on top of the boulder) to better simulate the experience of bouldering outside. For the height-shy, it is always acceptable to climb down at any point if you’d rather not go to the top.
DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?
We recommend climbing shoes, chalk, and a chalk bucket, however none are required. A standard pair of tennis shoes will work, however we do not allow barefoot climbing. If you don't own any climbing gear, we rent shoes and chalk! Athletic apparel that allows for full range of motion is always recommended.
DOES THE CIRCUIT OFFER DONATIONS?
Yes! The Circuit is founded on community and we do our best to give back to the community that supports us. Looking for donations for a fund raiser or auction? Given the volume of donation requests, we can't accommodate every request, though we wish we could.

All persons in the gym must have a waiver on-file prior to using the facility. Minors must have waivers filled-out and signed by a parent or legal guardian. Save paper and fill out an online waiver or print a hard copy.
ARE THERE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS?
The Circuit is home to the best kids climbing space in Portland. Aside from our smaller, kid-specific boulders (designed with shorter climbers in mind) all of our walls our set up to accommodate climbers of all ages and ability levels. Another favorite kids activity here is slacklining. Slacklines look a lot like tightropes but are made of stretchy, flexible webbing rather than wire. Learning to balance and take steps on the slackline is a fun way for your child to rest their arms during a climbing session and has become a sport in and of itself! Check it out.
IS BOUDLERING SAFE FOR KIDS?
At The Circuit we strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for young climbers to challenge their abilities and build confidence on the wall. Encourage your child to explore our terrain at their own pace, you will probably be surprised by how comfortable your child already is with climbing. In order to ensure your child’s safety and the safety of others we require that all children under 13 be actively supervised by a responsible adult with at least a 6:1 child to adult ratio, however, a 4:1 ratio is recommended.
ARE THERE SPECIFIC HOURS FOR CHILDREN?
Kids are welcome any time we are open. Please keep in mind that children must be closely supervised at all times while in the gym and you will be sharing the climbing area with other families and groups.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT?
There is no minimum age for climbing. If your child is already trying to turn your home into a jungle gym, they're ready to start bouldering.
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR?
Kids should wear comfortable clothes that they can move in, freely, and socks and shoes that will stay on their feet. We also have climbing shoes available for rent or purchase in childrens sizes.
CAN I DROP MY CHILD OFF?
No. All children must be supervised by an adult at all times while they are in the climbing space. While childcare is not consistently available at the gyms, consider setting up a private instruction session or enrolling your child in one of our children's programs if you are unable to supervise your child while climbing.
IF I BRING MY CHILD'S FREIND, DOES THEIR PARENT NEED TO BE PRESENT?
No, however, each child must have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. If you are bringing any children that are not yours, their parents should fill out an online waiver or print a hard copy beforehand.
WHO CAN SIGN A WAIVER FOR A MINOR?
We will only accept waivers signed by a child’s parent or court-appointed legal guardian. We are unable to accept waivers signed by siblings, relatives, or friends. Our waiver form is available online - you can fill it out any time in advance of your visit or when you arrive at the gym.
WILL THERE BE SOMEONE TO SHOW MY CHILD WHAT TO DO?
Our staff will ensure that climbers are familiar with the rules and safety of the gyms, and may be available to provide some basic tips. We offer excellent kids clubs and camps for those seeking more involved instruction.
